He’s only just begun his championship reign, and already Samoa Joe is promising big changes for AEW.
Samoa Joe became the new champion in the main event of the company’s final PPV event of 2023, World’s End.
At the show on Long Island, Joe defeated Maxwell Jacob Friedman (otherwise known as MJF) to become the new champion.
It was the beginning of a bad ending to 2023 for MJF, but that’s not for us to discuss right now.
During the usual post-show media session, the new champion had a chance to speak about what 2024 has in store for him and the company.
Samoa Joe Promising Big Changes For AEW
And just like that, Joe is promising changes are coming.
First and foremost, he has promised that the old AEW Championship carried by Friedman will be “thrown in the garbage.
We have not formally or officially seen a replacement belt as of now, but Joe promised it would look better and represent a new phase of AEW.
This post looks pretty legit, but again, nothing officially announced.
As if that wasn’t enough, the victorious Samoa Joe took the time to be excited about, and hype up, his work on the upcoming WB Games-developed Suicide Squad video game.
Some thoughts…
First, new belt or a freshened up one could be good. The old belt grew on me, but it was not ever one I saw as iconic.
Second, in spite of challenges with the WB talks, things seem good for now.
Third…I know that we’ve heard some in WWE think that MJF re-signed a while ago, even though the man himself claims he is a free agent as of 1/1/2024.

What if he really is, and him possibly walking away from AEW is one more reason for that whole “new era of AEW” and the new belt?
Probably a reach…but…who knows anymore.
