As is often the case, a star’s injury has altered AEW plans.
In this specific instance, the star is Jon Moxley, and the plans cover upcoming shows that include, but are not limited to, WrestleDream.
For those who may not know, Moxley was injured on the September 20th edition of AEW Dynamite.
During a match with Rey Fenix, Mox sustained a concussion.
The match was for Moxley’s recently won International Championship. Due to the injury, plans changed on the fly, leading to Fenix becoming a surprise champion.
The injury, and unplanned title change, has forced AEW to change plans.
Before Jon had his bell rung, it was reported that he was slated to defend that title at WrestleDream, against someone from outside of AEW.
Who that would be had not been announced, and thus far there’s been no clear indication of who it might have been…or if they will now be fighting Rey Fenix.
Injury Has Altered AEW Plans
On top of changing plans, the entire situation has gotten one AEW employee some heat in the back.
No, not Rey Fenix.
Rather, the in-ring official, in this case Rick Knox, is getting flak for how things got handled.
The most glaring botch of the match, if not the show, was when Fenix delivered his first finisher.
According to Fightful, Moxley was concussed earlier in the match, but the first move delivered by Fenix saw Mox hit his head on the way down-leading many to think this was where it happened.
That was bad enough, and surely didn’t help the top AEW star.
But, Moxley by then had called his audible, and kept his shoulders down for a 3 count. Which Knox then proceeded to not count.
This led to an already-injured Jon Moxley taking yet another big move from Fenix before Knox counted 3.
So, it’s understandable why the ref has heat on him, especially as some noted this was not his first transgression.
As for the change in plans, we know it is always “card subject to change”. However, if Mox was injured early on, and he wasn’t supposed to lose, then someone should have had the ability to call for an injury stoppage or another ending where the title didn’t change hands.
That didn’t happen, and now AEW has had to scramble.
