Vince McMahon usually has a major say in how WWE is produced, but did he play a role in CM Punk returning at Survivor Series?
Vince McMahon Role In Bringing CM Punk Back To WWE
One of the best storylines WWE ever produced was CM Punk going against the McMahon family. In particular, the exchanges with Punk towards Vince McMahon and Triple H hit extra hard.
Punk’s contract was going to expire and WWE turned it into an angle. At Money in the Bank, CM Punk won the WWE Championship from John Cena and then proceeded to “leave” WWE.
In reality, he signed a new contract earlier in the day. Still, the moment blurred fiction and non-fiction, while creating great TV.
One of those segments was the famous pipe bomb. Punk sat on a stage and broke the fourth wall as he complained about Vince, stating the company would be better when he was dead.
Towards the end of Punk’s run, he disliked Vince and the entire pro wrestling business. He walked out of WWE and was fired months later.
He seemed done with wrestling, before joining AEW. That run started well, but ended with Punk’s termination due to backstage incidents like brawling.
Survivor Series closed in absolute shock as Punk returned during the final few minutes. Some wrestlers did not seem pleased he was there, but the live fans were ecstatic.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer went over Punk rejoining WWE and who was responsible.
“He signed a multi-year deal,” said Meltzer. “The deal came together about ten days ago.”
“It was a secret from almost everyone. Paul Levesque [Triple H] said the TKO people found out by watching the TV, which I thought was ridiculous until I asked around and heard the exact same thing.”
Also, Nick Khan helped Triple H hammer out the deal for Punk. As for Vince, he reportedly had no say during contract negotiations.
So, will Vince McMahon and CM Punk be able to get along now that they once again work under the WWE name?
