Fans have gotten some dream matches in recent years…and we almost had Cody Rhodes vs Sting.

While that may not go down as such a massive match as, say, Flair versus Hogan, or Brock versus well…pick someone, he’s had a lot of big ones…it would have still been huge.

And, once you understand Rhodes and how he grew up in this business? That match would have had all sorts of strong backstory to it.

The kind that some writers just can’t write, it would have been that good.

During the post-Crown Jewel media scrum, a victorious American Nightmare was asked a wide variety of questions.

Eventually, things landed back on how he had left AEW.

And, things turned to Sting, over how the WWE Hall of Famer and wrestling legend had finally announced his impending retirement early in 2024.

Once on that topic, this is when Cody told us just how things could have gone, had he stayed in AEW even for just a bit longer.

As he was preparing to exit the company, the last match AEW offered him was a chance to face Sting.

Now, to any wrestling fan, wrestling Sting would have to be a bucket list item.

But Cody Rhodes didn’t have the childhood that most wrestling fans did have.

Instead, Rhodes grew up around guys like Sting, thanks to his father being Dusty Rhodes.

So, while he grew up a Stinger, he was a lot closer to the legend than most.

As such, I can only imagine how significant such a match could have been, and what it would have met for Rhodes.

Alas, the match did not happen-as Cody said, it was the last match he was offered before leaving the company.

Clearly, as awesome as such a match would have been, it was not enough to sway Rhodes’ mind to stay with AEW, even if only for that one last match.
