Mustafa Ali being released by WWE was shocking for several reasons and apparently those within the company were upset about the move.
Mustafa Ali Release Upset Many In WWE
Earlier in the month, WWE and UFC officially merged. We knew this day was coming since around April and now, Vince McMahon no longer owns a majority of WWE shares.
Not long after the deal was completed, a bunch of names were let go. First, over 100 office workers were fired.
Then, WWE started to remove superstars from the main roster. It was followed by NXT and the Performance Center getting the same treatment.
Some of those let go, like Mustafa Ali, Dolph Ziggler and Dana Brooke, were a surprise. Now, Sean Sapp noted behind Fightful’s paywall how Ali’s release did not go over well with everyone in WWE.
Jade Cargill Signs Multi-Year WWE Deal
“Specifically, we were told that some of the frustration emanated from the fact that there’s been a renewed effort to stack NXT with familiar names,” said Sapp.
“Those that we heard from said there was no indication as of Tuesday that Mustafa Ali was going to be cut, and even no indication cuts would happen to anyone with a main roster contract.”
With Ali gone, that means his No Mercy match with Dominik Mysterio for the NXT North American Champion was off. Therefore, WWE booked a match on Tuesday which saw Trick Williams earn a shot at Dominik Mysterio.
There has not been any particular reason why WWE let Ali go. He did request his release several times years ago, but they were always denied.
Perhaps, it has something to do with the new owners.
As for the future, Ali should not have trouble getting signed. Of the many released names, he still has plenty upside.
So, did WWE make the wrong call in firing Mustafa Ali?
