Before Impact Wrestling and AEW, there was another pro wrestling company that tried to run WWE out of business. And, they came closer than anyone else.
It was the mid to late 1990s as WCW and WWE fought to what was called the Monday Night Wars. The battle lasted until the early 2000s, before WWE emerged as the victor.
Since then, only AEW has ever come close to topping WWE. Lately, WWE has pulled-ahead as AEW continues to struggle.
Both companies had several shows, but each ran two particular events that were primarily featured on TV. WCW had Monday Nitro and Thunder, while WWE had RAW and SmackDown.
AEW is currently undergoing drastic changes to what they air on TV. They stated with Dynamite and added some more along the way.
Rampage was the number two show for AEW, but that will change next month. Starting June 17, Collision debuts as a two hour show on Saturdays.
The idea was for Collision to revolve around CM Punk, who was suspended and injured during the AEW All Out Brawl in September. When the show was officially announced, there was no sign of Punk.
Clearly, the two sides are still having trouble getting back on track. There remains hope Punk and AEW can find a way to work together.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted how AEW Collision draws similarities to WCW. Collision’s logo does look similar to the one Nitro used from 1995 until 1998.
It is not clear in what other ways AEW’s new show will be similar to Nitro. Many questions still remain about Collision and AEW might be waiting to see if they can allure Punk back before giving any specific details.
