For AEW fans who caught the September 20th edition of AEW’s “Grand Slam” Dynamite, something seemed very “off” during the International title bout that saw Rey Fenix challenge Jon Moxley for the Championship. More on this story below.

Jon Moxley Seemed Very Hurt

In a surprising turn of events, Rey Fenix became the new AEW International Champion when he defeated Moxley last night. Still, it seemed as if something went seriously wrong during the end of the bout when Rey placed the champion in a piledriver.

The referee stopped the count before getting to three. Apparently, Mox was supposed to “kick out” but he didn’t.

Fenix hit the piledriver again and won the championship. The AEW star looked a bit disoriented after the first piledriver, leading some fans to wonder if the original plan was for Fenix to lose the match.

Fan footage from the event also seems to indicate that Mox had been injured during the match. See the above video tweets.

A Report Confirms Jon’s Injury

A report coming from PWInsider reveals it is believed backstage that Jon suffered a concussion during the match. This likely changed the initial plan with the International Championship, which would have seen the AEW superstar retain.

The severity of the injury was clear as doctors rushed to the ring to review his condition, after the match. The star did spend some time on the mat during his medical observation, but eventually sat up and walked out on his own.

As of this writing, there is no information on whether he’ll miss any in-ring action or how long he’ll need off to recover. Concussion injuries can be complicated when it comes to returning to the ring, and each case looks different than the next.
