Rob Van Dam entered into a program with AEW’s Jack Perry, but did his one match do enough to impress the backstage officials?
Did Rob Van Dam Impress AEW With Dynamite Performance?
AEW likes to bring in names from the past, even if only for one appearance or match. The latest example saw Rob Van Dam (RVD) appear for AEW.
It all started about a month ago when “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry turned heel. In the process, he won the FTW Championship from Hook.
For those unaware, the belt has special meaning in the orignal ECW. Taz, who is Hook’s father, introduced the belt to the hardcore brand.
Since Perry captured the belt, he has been challenging former ECW wrestlers. He had been trying to goat Jerry Lynn out of retirement, but to no avail.
Instead, Lynn introduced RVD. Within one promo, a title match between Rob Van Dam and Perry was set.
On Wednesday’s Dynamite, Rob Van Dam was unable to get the win over Perry. Although, he had the victory in hand before a referee bump.
After the match, Rob Van Dam spoke to AEW cameras about his one-off appearance.
“It felt pretty awesome going tonight,” said Rob Van dam. “I count on the fans’ positive energy that they bring.”
“I rely on connecting with them, but I’m still overwhelmed when they all have RVD signs and they’re all in unison chanting for me. It always exceeds my expectations. When that moment is real and I’m connected to them, it’s nothing but love. Love is the most powerful energy in the universe.”
As for the match, everything went smooth. The former ECW star might be 52 years old, but he still moves in and out of the ring really well.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that those backstage were also happy with his performance. This could see Rob Van Dam return down the line.
After ECW folded, Rob Van Dam went to WWE. He did manage to win the WWE Championship, but was arrested shortly after for possession of marijuana. His push seemingly ended there.
He did return to WWE on a few occasions and even worked for Impact Wrestling recently.
So, should AEW offer RVD at least more match?
