AEW Reportedly Plan To Use Sneaky Tactic To Delay Rey Fenix’s Rumored Departure To WWE

A new report suggests that AEW is planning to use a sneaky but understandable tactic to delay Rey Fenix’s rumored departure to WWE.

There has been a lot of speculation about the future of the Lucha Bros. in recent weeks. Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero Miedo are, arguably, the greatest tag team in the short history of AEW. However, recent rumors claimed the contracts of the former tag and trios champions were set to expire this month.

Last week, various outlets claimed the duo had come to terms on deals with WWE. However, follow-up reports suggested that was not yet finalized. Friday brought a major update when it comes to Rey Fenix, and it seems like he won’t be leaving AEW any time soon.

Wrestling Observer reporter Dave Meltzer revealed today that AEW plans to tack injury time onto Rey Fenix’s contract. Which will force him to remain on the roster for “nearly but not quite one” more year. But what about the contract situation of his brother Penta El Zero Miedo?

When it comes to Penta, he does not have any notable injury time that could be added to his contract. Meltzer confirmed he will be WWE-bound in a couple of months after “WWE made him a competitive offer. So that solidified his decision to leave.”

AEW allegedly made “significant offers” to the Lucha Bros. but the pair declined the opportunity to remain with the company.

The strategy of adding injury time to a contract is one that WWE has used for many years when Vince McMahon was leading the company. The strategy has been curbed a bit since Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Nick Khan took over full control late last year. However, it seems it is being continued in AEW to avoid losing the tag greats at the same time.

Fenix seemed to confirm the news in an Instagram post with a series of pictures of him and his brother. The post was captioned “thanks for everything.”
