Anyone who has followed me probably knows I have a soft spot for this category, so let’s talk about the 2023 tag team match of the year.
I would argue that the past 12 months have given us quite a good amount of tag team fun.
Maybe I could even say we’ve seen a bit of a tag team renaissance in the last year or two, but that’s a different topic for another time.
So, let us get into what I felt were the top three tag team matches of 2023.
2023 Tag Team Match Of The Year: The Usos Vs Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens (WrestleMania 39)
Why did this get the top spot? So many reasons, really.
Primarily? It was the first tag team title match to main event WrestleMania.
It took 39 iterations of WWE’s Showcase of the Immortals. More chances than that, when you figure the last few years have given us 2 nights of the event.
Plenty of chances, and yet never before had two tag teams been so big, no rivalry so fierce that a WrestleMania main event spot was warranted.
And then we had this one.
Kevin Owens against the Bloodline. So much so that he “freed” his friend, Sami Zayn, from their clutches.
Reunited with his long time best friend (and sometimes fierce rival), the duo managed to get a shot at the unified tag titles…at WrestleMania.
And while it went off as the main event for Night 1 of WrestleMania, the match delivered in spades and gave fans the “go home happy” moment of the weekend.
2023 Tag Team Match Of The Year Honorable Mention: FTR Vs The Young Bucks (All In)
FTR is simply put, one of the best tag teams doing it today, and will likely go down as one of the best of all time.
The Young Bucks may not be quite at that level, but I’d bet if you asked them, they would think they were.
Which is fine, top teams should be that cocky. And it isn’t bragging if you back it up.
And for their match at All In? Both teams backed it up.
One of the best matches on the entire card, it was in my opinion the best tag match out of AEW for the entirety of 2023.
Granted, I should say that for these, I did not consider any Trios matches or similar, more specialized matches.
But, even if I had…this one is just tough to top. Honestly, had the winner not been a WrestleMania main event, this one might have been the overall winner.
2023 Tag Team Match Of The Year Honorable Mention: The Usos Vs Roman Reigns And Solo Sikoa (Money In The Bank)
There were choices across WWE and AEW that could have landed here. Maybe you feel like something else should be here.
That is fine, you are allowed to have that view, but this one is mine…and here’s why.
Bloodline Civil War. This set up much of the rest of 2023 for that saga.
And, it basically launched Main Event Jey Uso on his current trajectory.
After all, it was here, at London’s O2 Arena, WWE Money In The Bank 2023, where Roman Reigns took a pinfall loss for the first time in 1294 days.
Not a typo.
So, sure, non-title (The Usos had lost them already), just a blood feud, but what a battle.
Since getting pinned in London in a tag match, Reigns still remains otherwise unpinned.
Jey almost did the deed at SummerSlam, but that gave us a whole new wrinkle in the Bloodline saga…which still continues to this day.
