As is known to happen, AEW title plans may have changed.

The old time wrestling posters say it all the time : “card subject to change”.

That isn’t quite what could be in play here, but we’ve still seen this happen from time to time.

Back at WrestleDream, the company held a four way tag team match to determine a new #1 contender.

The Young Bucks were victorious, becoming the next team in line for the tag belts.

Or were they?

According to the Wrestling Observer, the plan had been to have the Bucks square off against then-champions FTR.

However, plans changed in a major way.

Abruptly, FTR dropped the tag belts, in part due to an injury. Big Bill and Ricky Starks became perhaps the unlikeliest of champions we’ve yet seen in AEW.

So the Bucks would just go challenge the new champs, right?

Maybe…but maybe not.

As pointed out by the Observer, the Bucks were on this week’s edition of Dynamite.

What wasn’t on Dynamite? Any mention of their #1 contender status.

By way of omission, we have to wonder if AEW decided that, with the change in tag champs, they’d pivot off of the Young Bucks as the top contender for now.

Speculation is that we were indeed going to be getting Bucks/FTR for the fourth time with gold on the line.

That can still happen, of course. Once FTR is 100% healthy, I wouldn’t be shocked if they challenged for, and regained the gold.

Or, if when challenging for their belts, the Young Bucks remind everyone that they do indeed have dibs.

Honestly, an eventual triple threat match would not be the worst next step.

And, as most fans know, such a match means that either the Bucks or FTR could become new champions, without the other major tag team taking the fall.

That could allow AEW to build toward another FTR/Bucks match at say, a major company show in 2024?
