Before signing, a former AEW champion actually agreed to ink a deal with WWE. So, what idea did Tony Khan have to convince them to join AEW?

Former AEW Champion Almost Signed With WWE

Tony Khan has created some original gimmicks and one of those is the The Acclaimed. The popular tag team are huge merchandise sellers and over with the crowd.

Once they added Billy Gunn (aka Daddy Ass), their popularity went even higher. Although, none of this almost happened.

On Chrissy Chaos, former AEW champion Anthony Bowens went over how he actually agreed to join WWE. Khan then pitched him the idea of teaming with Max Caster and the rest is history.

“I found myself in a position where I was lucky enough to be able to choose, whether I went to WWE or AEW,” said Bowens. “Actually, I said yes to WWE, and then Tony found out and flew me down there.”

“That’s when I met Max, my tag team partner, Max Caster, for the first time and he was like, ‘Hey, we’ve got this idea for […] or I got this idea for you to be The Acclaimed,’ and I was like, ‘That’s awesome.’ I don’t know what it is, but cool, that’s really awesome.”

“We went out, we wrestled that night, and then he came back and he was like, ‘Here’s your contracts.’ I signed it right away.”

They had a nice run with the AEW Tag Team Championships before dropping them earlier in the year. Since then, they have not been featured as much.

Recently, Billy Gunn hinted at retirement after a quick loss to House of Black. It remains unclear if this a storyline or legit.
