If you watched this week’s show, you’ll likely be interested in the report on Rey Mysterio’s SmackDown injury.
Setting the table for you, if I may.
Heading into this week’s show from New Orleans, WWE ran two fatal four way matches to help identify a new #1 contender for Austin Theory’s United States Championship.
In a bit of a surprise, Rey Mysterio won one of those qualifiers, to battle LWO stablemate Santos Escobar in the final.
That #1 contender match happened to kick off the July 28 SmackDown.
The pair gave us a good, competitive match, with no funny business, and no heel turn by either Superstar.
What we got, however, was a match that ended abruptly and prematurely.
Or did it?
As the match seemed to be getting close to it’s climax, Escobar delivered a suicide dive, and we had the show cut to commercial.
When we came back, however? The match was stopped due to WWE medical staff stoppage.
Report On Rey Mysterio’s SmackDown Injury
Well, as we do often see in this day and age, we have an update on the injury.
And, if you were concerned for the WWE Hall of Famer…breathe easy.
Sometimes injuries happen for real, and sometimes they are planned.
This one is a planned one it seems.
Now, my two cents, as I voiced in the Nutshell? I have to see where this goes, but my immediate reaction is, if this is how they avoided a heel turn…just book a different opponent.
Then again, I suspect WWE did not want LA Knight here to lose…
Per an earlier report, with Escobar now the #1 contender, he could be in line to knock off Austin Theory.
While he is not over like Knight is, Escobar is a solid choice to be the next champion...if that is indeed how things play out.
As for Rey? Maybe he wanted or needed a break, but we have to see where this plan goes.
