The Briscoes are one of the most popular wrestling tag teams of all time. While the WWE did have a shot to snag the brothers, they passed on signing them as they weren’t “cosmetically pleasing”.
WWE Passed Over The Briscoes
Mark and Jay Briscoe spent most of their careers in Ring of Honor (ROH). With that being said, they also worked in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) and IMPACT.
Mark Briscoe recently chatted with Chris Jericho during an edition of Talk is Jericho and explained why they never worked for the WWE. According to Briscoe, it’s because John Laurinaitis didn’t think they were “cosmetically pleasing”.

Briscoe notes that “everybody” was saying that “everyone” in the promotion really liked them and they thought the WWE would bring them on. The brothers waited about a week or two after their audition.
Mark finally did hear back from Laurinaitis, who told them that the company liked their stuff, but was going to pass for right now. John also told the team that if they wanted another try to let them know.

Mark states that this “rubbed” him the wrong way. When John called Jay (either right before or right after he talked to Mark), Laurinaitis told him that the tag team wasn’t “cosmetically pleasing” enough.
The WWE’s loss was ROH’s gain. The Briscoes would end up staying with the promotion for the rest of their careers until Tony Khan purchased the wrestling company in 2022.
The two captured their last tag title run at the ROH Final Battle event in December 2022, defeating FTR. Sadly, in early 2023, disaster struck.
Jay Briscoe passed away in a car collision in January of this year, leaving his younger brother Mark to carry on the Briscoe wrestling legacy. Over the years, the brothers have held the ROH tag team titles 13 times, and has also held tag gold in IMPACT and NJPW.
