Matt Cardona has turned himself into the king of the independent wrestling scene. But the former Zack Ryder may finally be ready to do more. Since his release from WWE back in 2020, he has worked just about anywhere and everywhere a wrestler could. He has done quite well for himself, literally making a new name for himself and burying the Long Island Iced Z in the process. Many times over the past few years, Cardona has been asked about getting out of the indy scene and back into a major promotion. Some thought that time had come when he did work with AEW, but it was not a long term deal.
The time could be now
Cardona shared some thoughts about such a move on his YouTube channel. The former WWE Superstar said he is at a point where the time for such a move is likely here and now. He’s not getting any younger, but he believes he is in the best shape of his life (and he just returned from a significant injury, ahead of schedule). I believe that if he wants to, when he wants to, both AEW and WWE would be interested in the former Intercontinental Champion. One comment that stuck out was when Cardona said he believes he could be a difference maker in WWE.
Honestly, given the current environment and leadership? I can see it. If Vince were still around, I would have serious doubts. But in some ways, Matt Cardona’s transformation is at least a little similar to what Cody Rhodes did. Not down to forming a new company and all that, but he left WWE and rediscovered or even reinvented himself. And in doing so, he has made himself into something that WWE did not see him as during his prior stint. That is, a difference maker.

With his wife already working for WWE again, he is no doubt hearing all the good and bad within company. Could Matt Cardona return to WWE? Or would he prefer AEW? But if he has a dream, much like Cody did, to one day be WWE Champion. It’s hard to hold that title in AEW, so it does seem like that might give Triple H and Nick Khan a leg up on the competition. Could we see Matt Cardona be a surprise return early next year, either on the RAW Netflix debut or in the 2025 Royal Rumble?
