The hope was CM Punk would be cleared to return before WWE SummerSlam, so how close are we to that actually happening?

In the past few decades, SummerSlam has always been towards the second half of August, if not he final week. This year, they are producing the show early on August 3. It comes from the Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, and while several matches are rumored, nothing is confirmed. One of the biggest matches WWE wanted to produce was CM Punk vs Drew McIntyre.
The storyline has been dragged-out since Punk injured his triceps during the Royal Rumble after a DDT from McIntyre. Originally, they wanted Punk vs Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40 as it would allow the straight edge superstar to finally be in the main event of WWE’s top show. That was one of the reasons Punk left WWE a decade ago and also a major factor in him returning. Most WrestleMania storylines needed to be adjusted because of Punk’s injury and The Rock returning as a heel.
It Be Will Close If CM Punk Make WWE SummerSlam
Well, the news is not great about Punk. Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp noted he was not cleared as of last Friday on SmackDown. Hence, WWE ran an angle where McIntyre bloodied Punk backstage and left him for everyone to see. As some speculated, that was done to give Punk more time to heal. WWE still wants those two battling at SummerSlam, but it is not a guarantee.
Upon returning, look for Punk to work with McIntyre for months. Remember, Punk cost McIntyre the World Heavyweight Championship on two occasions. With their disdain, no title is needed to elevate the feud. Somehow, Punk would need to move past McIntyre and focus on the top prize in WWE to fulfill his dream. A Royal Rumble win would easily insert Punk into the title picture. So, will CM Punk be cleared to return by SummerSlam?
