It’s time for another round of SmackDown results, this time for September 20th, 2024, and we are building toward Bad Blood.

Quick Results

  • LA Knight defeats Andrade to retain the United States Championship. Great match, a few botches but a great match. Would love to see this again.
  • Apollo Crews once again defeated Giovanni Vinci. Not what I expected when they brought Vinci back.
  • Bayley and Naomi pinned Nia Jax to win the tag tornado match. Both women got the pin, and now must fight each other to become #1 contender.
  • Kevin Owens and The Street Profits and the Bloodline (Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa and Jacob Fatu) ended in a disqualification. It did break down, but I thought the move that got the DQ was one of the weaker ones in recent memory.

Best Match

Two choices, for two different tastes. From a pure wrestling match, botches aside, Andrade and LA Knight was it. Andrade deserves the title sooner than later, in my opinion. For just fun? That would be the six man main event. Train wreck, bumps, lots of action. Lots going on too, with WWE showing that it took 6 men (DIY, Profits, Owens and Cody Rhodes) to fend off the Bloodline trio. And, for a moment, it looked like Owens was ready to drill Cody, since he’s in the middle of that because of him.

And…we never did hear from KO about what his thoughts were on Rhodes/Reigns and all that. Either the heel turn is coming, or WWE and KO just like trolling us.

Worst Match

Giovanni Vinci and Apollo. Like, happy for Crews getting himself a bit of a winning streak, but this was just a waste on a show that was surprisingly short on matches.

Noteworthy Moments

Bayley offered a hug to Naomi. Could that be the beginning of the return of the Hugger? Or simply a tongue in cheek reference to her past and nothing more.

The Reigns/Rhodes segment at the Georgia Tech field was, I think, nice. Reigns laid claim to Atlanta, but Cody reminded him that his family was bleeding in these parts long before, and much more than, Reigns. It’s an interesting dynamic, with Reigns still not really acting at all like a face, even though that is of course how he is working. Something tells me once certain people are back in his life, things will get there.

All too predictably, that tornado tag match led to a double pin, kind of. Naomi and Bayley won, so neither is leaving SmackDown yet. However, the pin was sloppy. Maybe it was supposed to be, but that was too sloppy. Like, aren’t the WWE “rules” that no one can have a body part under the bottom rope during a pin (both winner and loser). I could be wrong on that, but I swear that’s been a thing before. In any case, rather than making it a triple threat at Bad Blood, Nick Aldis announced that Naomi and Bayley fight next week to decide the challenger. Those SmackDown results should be fun.

Holy Sh#$ Moments

Tama Tonga speaks. Kevin Owens told him we don’t want to hear him again. Not sure I would disagree with that.

Lowlights

Love LA Knight, but the botches are a steady thing with him. I don’t want to assume those would keep a world title off of him, because Triple H isn’t Vince. But, they could. Upside is he dusts off and goes on, instead of letting them ruin things. Still, Andrade works fast, and at times it was like Knight just couldn’t keep up with that flow.

Highlights

The Bloodline arrived to the show in a bad mood, with Jacob Fatu the most annoyed going through security. Kind of liked it, because all it was? Him not wanting to get patted down. Selling his instability, so you like to see it. The Reigns/Rhodes cinematic segment was really good. Well done for that. And Owens continues to tease a turn-my question is, will he turn on Rhodes or will Cody beat him to the punch?

After The Final Bell

This is the type of show that shows why USA will expand SmackDown to three hours once RAW leaves for Netflix. A two hour show, for the talent on hand? It was not enough tonight. Hopefully that extra hour in a few months gets put to good use. That being said, how Reigns and Rhodes co-exist is going to be interesting, as will be whatever finally sets Kevin Owens off. Buckle up!
