AJ Styles has had a noteworthy 2024. We witnessed some intense matches between he and Cody Rhodes-for the undisputed championship, no less. The match both Superstars put on in France surely should be in the discussion for match of the year. Amidst that great work from the former WWE champion, we also saw hints that perhaps he was closer to hanging up the boots than we thought. Granted, the teased retirement on television did turn into a nice angle and got him a lot of heat, but there still could be something to it.
Friday turns Phenomenal
In recent weeks, reports had come out about Styles surrounding his extended television absence. Per those reports, Styles was healthy but not being used on regular television. He had, of course, worked extensively during the company’s recent European and Asian tours. And it should surprise no one that the Japanese fans loved having Styles back. All of this while his contract is said to be expiring sooner than not. With that in mind, some might have wondered if we would be seeing him back in a WWE ring.

Instead, WWE put out a teaser vignette announcing that AJ Styles would be returning to SmackDown next week. Considering the contract rumors and what could happen in the coming months? Getting him back on television has to be a good sign. Personally, I see a television return as a sign that the relationship between the Superstar and WWE remains amicable and professional. Whether that translates into a contract extension or not remains to be seen. We do know that the company have extended a few notable names in recent weeks, including Sheamus. Could AJ Styles be next?
