Why Steve Austin Declines WWE WrestleMania 39 Match

Steve Austin quietly retired from WWE after WrestleMania 19. Almost two decades later, Austin would wrestle another match at WrestleMania 38 against Kevin Owens.

Overall, the match looked great. It was a good old Street Fight from Texas, which allowed Austin to compete without exposing his age or lost in-ring skills.

They closed the first night of WrestleMania 38, with Austin securing the win. Then, at night two of WrestleMania 38, Austin made a cameo where he hit several stunners, including to Vince McMahon.

Because the match went so well, there was talk of brining Austin back for another bout. When speaking to Sports Illustrated, Austin went over why another match never happened.

“We talked about the possibility of me wrestling at WrestleMania 39,” said Austin. “The biggest thing in my mind was the presentation and what kind of match it was going to be.”

“The Texas Rattlesnake” didn’t want it to be a “constructed” match. Instead, he preferred one that came together in the moment.

“But to do a proper match, I’d have to be in off-the-charts shape,” said Austin. “I told them, and this is the exact truth, I said, ‘Guys, I’m just fixin’ to go into production on this show, ‘Stone Cold Takes on America,’ and until we start production, I don’t know what my life looks like. I can’t commit.’ Sure enough, there were technical issues before we finished.”

Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and LA Knight were a few of the names WWE offered. Ultimately, Austin passed and has not been spotted on WWE TV for over a year.
