Does Mercedes Mone have complete creative control of her AEW character? Tony Khan says no, but that might be even more worrisome.
“That’s definitely not true at all,” Khan said about Mone having creative control during today’s AEW All In media call [h/t NoDQ]. “I would love to talk about that. Mercedes Mone is an incredible talent. I have wanted Mercedes Mone in AEW, and she is a big star on the show. I really enjoy working with her backstage as a talent. And she has done great things for the company doing media.

“Mercedes is a great addition to AEW. I also think it’s ridiculous. The idea that people would think, because she’s a strong wrestler on the show, that she must be the one dictating that. That is the complete opposite of what happens here.”
For months, fans have speculated that Mone was given creative control when she signed with the company last year. The woman FKA as Sasha Banks in WWE has yet to lose a singles match and has held on to the TBS Championship for over a year. That, along with winning a boatload of independent titles, has frustrated some wrestling fans.

However, Khan’s comment should bring a definitive end to the idea that she controls what happens with her character. However, if she did, it might be more palatable than the truth. Which is that Khan is a huge Mone fan. And if fans are frustrated with how she has been booked, all of that anger should be directed at the AEW CEO. When her dominance in the company ends is anyone’s guess.
The AEW boss also gave further details on how he and Mone come up with the creative for her character.
“At least once a week [he and Mone meet], but usually multiple times a week, and hear out ideas she might have, and they hear out ideas I have. For [Mone], I’m very involved in the direction of the character personally. In Mercedes’ case, someone she worked with for a long time who is Jen [Pepperman], and I work well with Jen and Mercedes.”
