Shocking Retirement Stipulation Added To Ryan Garcia Vs. Devin Haney Fight

Ryan Garcia

Ryan Garcia has had quite a sudden impact on the boxing world.

A former WBC interim lightweight champion, Garcia will meet Devin Haney in April for the WBC super lightweight title.

However, it could all be over in seconds following a stipulation by Haney’s team.

During a press conference earlier this week, Bill Haney, Devin’s father, put out a retirement clause for Garcia.

“If you get knocked out in the first round, are you going to retire?” the elder Haney said (thanks to DAZN for the quotes).

Garcia had a quick response, saying, “I’ll give you my word,” as the two shook hands.

Now, the likelihood of this happening is slim to none, as Garcia has been stopped just once in his 25-fight pro career. That came last year in his lone loss to Gervonta Davis.

Ryan Garcia Willing To Bet On Himself

Garcia, who has also trained in other combat sports arenas, owns a 24-1 record with 20 knockouts to his credit. He rebounded from the loss to Davis to finish Oscar Duarte in December.

The 25-year-old from California was a 15-time national amateur champion with a record of 215-15. He turned pro in 2016 and is regarded as one of the top fighters in the world by most publications.

Garcia won his first title in 2017 with a 30-second knockout of Miguel Carrizoza for the WBC-NABF junior super featherweight belt. He stopped Luke Campbell in 2021 for the vacant WBC interim lightweight title.

Devin Haney Brings Perfect Record To Match

Haney is unbeaten in his pro career, sporting a 31-0 record. That includes a December victory over Regis Prograis for the WBC super lightweight title.

With the win over Prograis, he became a two-weight champion at just 25 years old. Haney owns wins over Vasiliy Lomachenko, George Kambosos Jr. and Joseph Diaz Jr. in recent years.

The Garcia-Haney bout takes place April 20 from Las Vegas.
