Last December, following Ring of Honor’s (ROH) Final Battle event, Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee broke up as a tag team. Still, the two never had a singles match where they faced off. Why is AEW not moving forward with a one-on-one bout?
AEW Not Moving Forward With A Match
Back in July, Fightful Select reported that there were plans to book a bout between the former AEW World Tag Team Champions. Sadly, nothing came to fruition.
During a recent Wrestling Observer Radio show, Dave Meltzer provided an update for fans. As Dave puts it, they (AEW) are “just not” going to do it, and “they” have already “made that call”.
Meltzer didn’t offer an exact reason as to why the match wasn’t happening. Although he does note that the “deal” was that some “people” questioned if the bout would be any “good”.
Dave goes on to say the audience gets plenty of not-so-good matches on television “all the time”. He added that the company should just “freaking” do it.
Is Zoey Stark On A Fast Track?
The tag team had growing issues heading into December after they lost their tag titles. During the December 21st episode of Dynamite, Strickland aligned with Parker Boudreaux, Mogul Affiliates, Rick Ross, and Granden Goetzman, who all attacked Lee.
Lee and Strickland faced off in tag team matches earlier in 2023, but still haven’t had a one-on-one. Looks like it may not happen anytime soon.
Swerve Strickland became All Elite in 2022 after being released by the WWE in November 2021. He had a nice NXT North American Championship reign of 105 days just before he was let.
Meanwhile, Keith Lee also joined the company in 2022, after the WWE released him in early November 2021. Lee was a former NXT Champion and NXT North American Champion.
