A new rumor claims that a WWE legend who has a history with Randy Orton was in the discussion to be his mystery opponent at WrestleMania 41.
One of the most notable moments from this weekend’s WrestleMania 41 card was the unveiling of Randy Orton’s opponent. To the surprise and joy of those in attendance at Allegiant Stadium, it ended up being TNA Wrestling Champion Joe Hendry. However, another notable TNA star was also seriously considered.
According to PW Nexus reporter Cory Hays, former multi-time WWE champion and future Hall of Famer Jeff Hardy was also a name under consideration internally to be Orton’s opponent on night two of WrestleMania 41.
There have been rumblings for some time that the current TNA tag team champions, the Hardys, are likely to appear in WWE at some point this year. Due to the partnership the two brands made official earlier this year. Furthermore, Hardy and Orton have an extensive history of various feuds they have had over the years in WWE.
He certainly would have been a great option and would have gotten a massive pop from fans on Sunday night. However, when Hendry’s TNA contract is up in the next year or so, WWE will make a strong push to sign him in free agency. Having him compete at WrestleMania was likely part of that early recruiting.
Hendry’s appearance was a major plus for TNA. He is an exclusive talent of the company, and having that top champion be on the biggest show of the year creates a huge amount of brand recognition for the company.
