It was a big new item last week. Multiple reports were indicating that Rey Fenix and Penta had signed with WWE. Collectively, while in AEW, we knew them as the Lucha Bros. The team are indeed real life brothers. Reports had indicated that the pair were going to negotiate together and be a package deal, wherever they would go. For weeks, if not longer, the belief was that the team was indeed wanting a move to WWE. Similarly, reports indicated that WWE had mutual interest. So, when the reports broke indicating that the pair had signed, it was expected and not entirely surprising.

Not so fast

According to the Wrestling Observer, the deals may not be done just yet. The sticking point? While both men had contracts with similar if not identical expirations, Rey Fenix has a complication. Should Tony Khan wish to do so, he can tack on a significant amount of time lost to injury. Fenix sustained a nasty leg injury on AEW television, which cost him close to a year. So while Penta may be signed, or may soon be signed? According to the reports, Rey Fenix is currently still under AEW contract. Knowing that the brothers intend to take their services to WWE, might Tony Khan make life difficult?

I can absolutely see Khan tacking on time and messing things up. While it might not be the nice move, it is certainly within his contractual rights. And we’ve seen it done with WWE talent before, so it isn’t a foreign concept. Still, how many disenfranchised talents would Tony Khan need to employ? We have heard stories in recent months of some talents wanting out, and Khan not wanting to let them go. The latest (outside of perhaps one half of the Lucha Brothers) is Miro.

While I get he has the funds, and with the pending TV deal, he will have more. Is it really smart business to keep people around who have publicly stated they don’t want to be there? Use the television time for someone else, and use the money on something else. Granted, it is not my money, and Tony Khan won’t take my advice. I don’t see Penta or Rey boosting WWE ratings so much that AEW would regret the move. Are they good? Yes. But I don’t see them as needle movers like Cody Rhodes or CM Punk, so why be spiteful? Is it worth it to delay a Lucha Brothers debut in WWE?
