Punk and The Undertaker had their clashes. The Second City Saint, back when he was a Paul Heyman guy, took a run at what was then “The Streak”. As we all know, he wasn’t the Paul Heyman guy to get the job done (no one should have been). So, does The Undertaker respect Punk because of how the two battled in the ring?
Not at all. I mean, he could, but that isn’t why he does, per a recent interview. Rather, it’s because of what CM Punk did, when no one would have blamed him for just going away and doing nothing. Specifically, The Undertaker has a great deal of respect for Punk owed to when the mercurial Superstar left WWE and decided to give UFC a shot.
But why?
As the Phenom puts it, CM Punk didn’t need to deal with UFC. He was a major pro wrestling name, that was his calling card. But he vowed he was done with wrestling (he wasn’t) so he tried UFC. Not only did he try, but he failed. He was defeated twice (one since overturned) and he looked like a fish out of water. But he wanted to do it. He said he was going to do it. And he stepped away from wrestling while he was a major Superstar to give his dream a go.

But because he said he was going to do it, and because Punk didn’t seem to care what anyone thought? And, it was a risk for sure. The Undertaker has said that he will always have respect for CM Punk for that reason. Probably some others too. And as the WWE Hall of Famer noted, it may have taken a decade, but eventually, Punk came back around and is where he belongs.
