At one point, an idea was pitched for Owen Hart to become WWE Champion and it would result in Bret Hart chasing his brother for the belt.

WrestleMania X was unique as the WWE Championship was defended twice. First, Yokozuna retained the title via disqualification due to special referee Mr. Perfect. Next, Bret Hart pinned Yokozuna with Roddy Piper as the referee in the main event. The show closed with Bret celebrating with his fellow superstars, as Owen Hart watched from the entrance ramp.
See, WrestleMania X opened with Owen pinning Bret clean. It was a major shock to the fans in attendance. The feud continued until SummerSlam 1994, when Bret defeated Owen inside a steel cage. That was always the plan, but Bruce Prichard suggested an additional layer to the angle that was eventual scratched. Basically, Prichard thought Owen should win the WWE Championship and then lose to Bret inside the cage.
Owen Hart Would Have Made A Great WWE Champion
“One idea that was floated out there was that Owen would beat Bret for the title,” said Prichard on the Something To Wrestle With podcast. “I truly do believe that one of the best stories we ever did was the whole Bret Hart – Owen Hart story, and brother versus brother. Because, I think most folks can identify with sibling rivalries. In this scenario, Owen was the one chasing, and Bret always just beat him. And, I’ll also say this, I think the stuff that Bret did with Owen was maybe some of Bret’s all-time best work ever as well.”
The Hart Family is full of accomplishments and sad moments. Owen sadly passed away after a stunt malfunctioned during WWE’s Over The Edge. He fell like 60 feet to his death, hitting the steal post. Bret eventually left WWE for WCW, but a kick from Goldberg to the head ended his career. Bret made peace with WWE all these years, while Owen’s immediate family wants nothing to do with the company. So, do you think Owen Hart should have become WWE Champion?
