He couldn’t yet cut it as a wrestler, and now former WWE Superstar Gable Steveson sees his NFL dream dashed as well.

Gable Steveson might be one of the most-hyped WWE signings of the past decade. You can understand why, too. He came to the company with a very decorated amateur background. Steveson shared a similar path as all time WWE great and future Hall of Famer Brock Lesnar. Once the NCAA Name, Image and Likeness program became reality, WWE made Steveson their biggest early signing. He was introduced to tons of fanfare, getting a big WrestleMania moment before some wrestling lifers ever did. We knew he was wrapping up an amateur and Olympics career before diving into WWE, hence some of the delay to an in ring debut.

But, we did finally get that debut, and it was underwhelming. It was fitting then that he had that one and only one match in WWE. When the company decided to clean out the roster, Steveson was a big name cut from WWE. The message was clear. As talented and athletically gifted as Gable Steveson may be, he was not “getting it” as a professional wrestler. Despite the training and effort, it was not translating into success in front of the camera.

What Next?

Once released, many wondered what, if anything, Steveson could do next. Would AEW give him a shot? After all, plenty of former WWE Superstars have ended up working for Tony Khan. And just because he didn’t work out in the WWE Performance Center doesn’t mean he won’t ever put it all together. Then again, could he go to UFC? After all, UFC and WWE are one big happy family. But thus far, no interest in him going to the MMA world-which is something Lesnar had done, and done well.

But, he did try something else that Brock Lesnar did. Steveson, who never played organized football, tried out for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League. His tryout and raw skills prompted the Bills to sign him and keep him around for training camp. But, August 27th was the day of final cuts, with NFL rosters needing to get down to 53 players. When the Bills revealed their final cuts, Steveson was among those no longer on the roster.

To be fair, given just how green Steveson was, it would have taken a legendary camp to land him a spot. What will be interesting to see is if he can find a home on the Bills-or any other NFL team’s-practice squad. Such an opportunity, while not nearly as lucrative as a full time NFL or WWE deal, does mean he’d still earn money learning how to play football. And given his raw athletic talents, someone may give him a shot.
