The story of Mustafa Ali is an interesting one. During his WWE run, he started as “only a cruiserweight. But he then nearly had a WrestleMania moment for the ages, and then some. But then, he was kept on the sidelines, wound up using Twitter to beg for a release, and finally got his wish.
But could he make his way back
Ali sat down with Chris Van Vliet for a wide ranging interview. I found a few tidbits most exciting of all. All things considered, I mostly enjoyed Ali’s time with WWE. I, like many others, disliked his time with the disastrous Retribution angle. We won’t spend more time there.
At one point, he was enjoying amazing support from the WWE Universe. To the point that it seemed likely that WWE would put him in a world title match against Daniel Bryan. Unfortunately, Mustafa Ali got injured, and instead we got KofiMania.
During his interview with Van Vliet, Mustafa Ali noted that he was also slated to win Money In The Bank. As in, all day during walk throughs, he was expected to win and his peers were congratulating him. But then, as he put it, Vince McMahon made a last-minute change. This was the year Brock Lesnar wound up winning.
So, you miss out on a WrestleMania moment. You get a late switch out of winning the MITB match. No way you want to come back, right?
Wrong
Per Ali during the interview, he still has good relationships with WWE folks. With the move to Netflix, he acknowledges things are changing and he’s open to something in the future.
Not saying he would come back, but the WWE landscape would be a lot of fun with him. We know Penta is inbound, you have Dragon Lee, Humberto, Garza, Andrade and more. There are a lot of talents on the main roster and in NXT who can work some truly athletic and high flying matches. It is fun to think what Ali could do.
