Throughout wrestling history, fans have come to know and appreciate the best baby faces and the most terrible heels. In many cases, the all-time greats have spent time on both sides of the equation. Of course, there are plenty who excel in one role, but may never reach the same heights as the other. It happens. Honestly, I remember when I was learning how to become a pro wrestler. Back then, my trainer advised that any rookie would have the easiest go of it by starting off as a heel. As he said “it’s easy to get people to hate you”. Of course, that was a couple decades ago. It’s a lot more involved to be a heel in 2024.

What does he think?

Rhodes talked with The Pivot Podcast about fans calling for him to make a big change and take a big heel turn. The American Nightmare gave an eloquent explanation of his thoughts. He brought up one of the best heels we’ve ever seen: JBL. He compared him to the 2024 heel run for The Rock, and brought up an interesting point. When JBL was the top heel, he didn’t want his shirts being worn, he didn’t want to be popular among any fans. His goal was to be hated and help get the faces over.

Fast forward to earlier this year. Or even the past few years. The Rock was a top heel heading into WrestleMania 40. The Bloodline has been the dominant faction for years now. And while they have played on screen bad guys, they’ve also sold a ton of merchandise-and old school heels are not supposed to be popular enough to move shirts.

As for whether Cody will make a turn? It’s probably inevitable. Even Hulk Hogan eventually turned. And it will probably be amazing. But for now, he remains quite popular. Some Hall of Famers do believe his persona is well suited for a strong heel run, so we shall see. Could Cody Rhodes be a next great heel for the company?
