John Cena’s 17th WWE title reign will continue beyond WWE Backlash 2025. To the surprise of no one, the new evil version of the wrestling legend was able to outlast old rival Randy Orton in a wild main event bout in St. Louis. Now, the big question is who will the Hollywood star face next in his retirement tour.
We offer up five opponent options for Cena following his title defense this past weekend.
R-Truth

R-Truth being one of the only Cena defenders left is a story that has been going on for the last few weeks. Things were taken to the next level at Backlash when Truth helped the champ retain his title. However, while congratulating him at the post-event press conference, the fan-favorite was hit with an Attitude Adjustment through a table for a remark that bothered Cena.
Recent rumors have suggested Truth and Cena could be on a collision course for a match at this month’s Saturday Night’s Main Event card. That seems more likely now after this weekend.
Damian Priest

Damian Priest has a history with Truth. After the latter tried to work his way into a membership with Judgment Day in 2023. With the former world champion now a baby face, an angle could be created where Priest becomes Truth’s defender and looks for revenge against Cena for what he did after Backlash.
Cody Rhodes

We all assume Cody Rhodes will seek revenge on Cena for defeating him at WrestleMania 41. Well, that could come very soon with rumblings that Rhodes’ return is imminent. WWE might create a situation where Rhodes gets his rematch, but the champ holds on to the belt by disqualification. Forcing Rhodes to work his way back to a title shot towards the end of Cena’s retirement tour.
Uncle Howdy

One outside-the-box route WWE could go is Cena feuding with Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks. The faction is reportedly nearing a return, and Howdy’s brother Bray Wyatt has a history with Cena. Furthermore, the group has been known to attack wrestlers who turn their backs on their friends and family. They could feel that John Cena is doing that to his loyal fans with his heel turn. And look to punish him for it.
LA Knight

Cena is likely to hold on to the title through the summer. And he needs interesting foes to face and beat. One option could be former United States Champion LA Knight. After falling short at regaining the belt at Backlash, his dance card is free. Nick Aldis might set up a Battle Royale or tournament to find Cena’s next opponent.
Knight could regain his momentum by coming out on top in either scenario. A battle on the mic between the WWE legend and Knight would be highly entertaining.
