NXT Takeover New York (4/5/2019) Play By Play Coverage

Before we get to WrestleMania 35, the NXT brand gets their chance to steal the weekend. Yes, we have reached Takeover New York, which features every match having a title on the line. It’s a big night for the NXT superstars, so let’s get to the action.

NXT Tag Team Championship: War Raiders (Hanson & Rowe) vs. Aleister Black & Ricochet

Both teams have the agility and they also have plenty of respect for each other. Tons of stiff shots and reveals. War Raiders have the match won before Black with a stomp off the top rope to break the pin. Everybody hits moves to the outside and the crowd is going nuts. We almost had new champions before Rowe breaks the pin. Ricochet’s 630 misses and War Raiders get the victory with fall out.

Winners: War Raiders (Hanson & Rowe) to remain NXT Tag Team Champions


Both teams show respect as that’s probably the end of Aleister Black and Ricochet in NXT. Black and Ricochet are left in the ring as the crowd chants “NXT” and “you deserve it.” They bow and Ricochet is crying.

NXT North American Championship: Velveteen Dream vs. Matt Riddle

Crowd seems split, with Velveteen Dream having the slight advantage. Dream’s antics don’t seem to work on Riddle, who is using submissions. Riddle is in control before Dream starts hulking up. Dream goes for the rainmaker and gets caught in another submission. Riddle goes for another submission and Dream is able to turn it into a three count.

Winner: Velveteen Dream to remain NXT North American Champion


Riddle is shocked after suffering his first NXT loss. Post-match, Dream accepts Riddles’ bro fist-bump.


WWE United Kingdom Championship: Pete Dunne vs. Walter

Slow, technical start before some big shots get thrown. Walter’s size greatly helps, but Pete Dunne is not giving up. Dunne with a double foot stomp off the top rope as Walter is on the outside floor. The chops from Walter are too much as Dunne is bruised all over his body. Avalanche suplex off the top rope and somehow Dunne kicks out. Walter’s hands are getting destroyed. Dunne’s bitter end only gets a two count. Walter with a power bomb off the top rope and then a splash to get the title.

Winner: Walter to become the new WWE United Kingdom Champion

Fatal 4-Way match for the NXT Women’s Championship: Shayna Baszler vs. Io Shirai vs. Bianca Belair vs. Kairi Sane

For a bit, Io Shirai and Kairi Sane are working together. Tower of doom spot, with Belair getting the worst. Io had the title won before Sane broke the pin. Io does the same to Sane. Belair KO’d Io and Sane. Baszler jumps Belair and locks in the submission for the tap.

Winner: Shayna Baszler to remain NXT Women’s Champion


Two-Out-of-Three Falls Match for the Vacant NXT Championship: Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole

Adam Cole gets the first fall with a knee to the back of the head. Gargano gets the second fall by making Cole tap. Next pin or submission will lead to the title. They know each other so well that everything is getting countered or matched. Cole taps but the referee is distracted by Undisputed Era. Ref takes a bump and Undisputed Era take on Gargano. Somehow, Gargano kicks out. Gargano takes out all of Undisputed Era. Cole tries to take advantage, but Gargano still kicks out. The crowd is going nuts.  Gargano makes Cole tap to get the win.

Winner: Johnny Gargano to become the new NXT Champion

Candice LeRae comes to the ring and celebrates with Gargano. They head to the top of the ramp and Tommaso Ciampa, wearing the neck brace, comes out from behind. All three embrace to end the show.
