Ahead of Dynamite, AEW promoted a ladder match between Chris Jericho and Mark Briscoe. In the end, Jericho left as the new Ring of Honor World Champion. This marks his second run with the ROH belt and people seemed confused by the move.
Now, we are starting to hear why Tony Khan put the gold back on Jericho. And, it has revolves around securing a TV deal. “I think that if they are working on an ROH television deal,” said Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer Radio. “Then, it probably is beneficial for them to be champion; to try and close that deal.” AEW recently re-upped with Warner Bros Discovery. That will allow Dynamite, Rympage and Collision to air on TNT/TBS. Also, the content will move to the streaming service Max, starting in January.
Chris Jericho Was Already ROH World Championship
When Jericho won the the ROH title two years ago, it was for the same reason. Although, they were unable to find a TV deal. Instead, the promotion continues to stream online. Remember, ROH was in bad shape a few years ago. They were out of money and Khan still made the purchase. He owns a company that is frequently losing money. Mostly, it allows the bloated roster of AEW to work some ROH shows.
At this point, fans are tired of Jericho. There has been a growing call for his retirement, but he shows no interest. Putting a belt on him seems like a slap in the face to the younger wrestlers who helped carry the company. So, do you like Chris Jericho holding the ROH World Championship again?
