When CM Punk left WWE a decade ago, many wondered if he would return. As the years passed and nothing materialized, we started to think he was done. Then, everything changed once he signed with AEW. That union only lasted two years and was full of problems. In the end, AEW fired Punk and he quickly re-signed with WWE. Survivor Series closed with Punk returning to maybe the loudest pop ever. WWE planted the seeds for Seth Rollins vs Punk at WrestleMania 40. Although, an injury to Punk during the Royal Rumble changed everything.
Punk will be at WrestleMania, but not wrestling. His return to action will be closer to later summer. Still, he should play a role in Rollins vs Drew McIntyre. In the meantime, he has been promoting WWE and taking shots at AEW during a loaded episode of The MMA Hour. At one point, he was asked if AJ Lee would be returning to WWE a well. “Probably not,” said Punk. “I think there is [an open door]. Selfishly, I would love it. But, I’m her biggest fan, so I love everything she does.”
AJ Lee’s WWE History
After Punk walked-out of WWE, Lee was not far behind. She worked WrestleMania 31 and the next night’s RAW before departing. In her memoir, Lee noted several reasons for leaving. She felt fulfilled with her career, was having issues with her neck and felt uncomfortable being in the middle of Punk-WWE drama. About six years later, Lee worked for a season with Women of Wrestling (WOW) as an executive producer.
For now, it does not seem like AJ Lee will be making a massive return. But, folks said the same about Punk for the longest time. If she does return, look for it to be short-term. I just do not see her working 300 days a year. Maybe Punk and Lee teaming for one match might be enough to bring her out of retirement. So, is CM Punk correct that AJ Lee returning to WWE seems unlikely?
