Mike Tyson has been outspoken on what seems like Canelo Alvarez’s refusal to face the best of the best, and on Tuesday the Mexican star responded with a very spicy comment.

Canelo Alvarez without a shadow of a doubt is the most famous active boxer in the world. Over a 64-fight career, he has delivered highlight reel knockouts and was a part of some of the most successful pay-per-view cards of the last decade.

There was also a time when he was willing to take on the top fighters in the world but many fans and pundits of the sport feel that is no longer the case. Since his 2022 loss to Dmitrii Bivol Saul Alvarez has seemed to be a bit more risk-averse and many have questioned his bookings against fighters like John Ryder and Jermell Charlo in the final years of his prime.

One notable name inside the sport who has knocked Alvarez over his recent fight schedule is heavyweight legend Mike Tyson, who recently said it was “a shame” that he was unwilling to face fast-rising star, David Benavidez. A fighter many view as a serious threat to hand Alvarez the third loss of his career.

The super middleweight champion will be back in May but will be fighting Jaime Munguia. A respected pugilist but an opponent many fans were disappointed by. On Tuesday during a press conference for the May 4 bout, the superstar boxer was asked about comments from fans and fighters like Tyson, and he had a sharp rebuke for the negative feedback.

“I would respect his opinion if he was sober,” Alvarez said. “I don’t need to prove anything to anyone, I remember when that happened with [Gennady] Golovkin. I don’t need to prove anything. This fight is more important than others. When you guys ask me about Golovkin, Callum Smith, Billie Joe Sounders, or Caleb Plant, nothing is enough for you.”

Alvarez is a massive -600 favorite to beat Munguia on Cinco de Mayo weekend.
