A new report confirms that Cody Rhodes will not headline either night of Wrestlemania 40, however, he will still be in a major matchup that was hinted at on a recent edition of WWE Raw.

Several weeks ago, when WWE icon Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson hinted at a possible matchup against reigning WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, it seemingly derailed long-expected plans for Cody Rhodes. After falling to Reigns at last year’s event, the assumption has always been that he would “finish the story” in April.

But with Johnson now being a new member of the TKO Group Holdings board of directors and again hinting at a match against Reigns during interviews about the news on Tuesday, there has been speculation about what direction the company will go with one of their biggest stars now and in the future, Rhodes.

Well, those plans may have been revealed and it seemingly has changed expectations that fans had for another major bout at Wrestlemania 40. On Wednesday, Sports Illustrated wrestling reporter Justin Barrasso outlined a bunch of rumored plans for the top matchups at the two-night event, including the new plans for Rhodes.

Multiple sources close to WWE Head of Creative Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque have indicated that Rhodes will not headline this year’s event, nor will he ‘finish his story’ at WrestleMania,” Barrasso wrote. But there is still a new chapter to write with a marquee matchup to be had … against CM Punk.

The returning WWE legend was expected to face World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins at Wrestlemania. However, Barrasso claims that instead of facing Punk, Rollins — assuming he can return from his knee injury in time — will go toe-to-toe with Intercontinental Champion Gunther, who is now the new favorite to win the 2024 Royal Rumble.

The goal would be to build a fresh and strong world champion in Gunther, and set him up to headline the company’s premium live event in Germany this August, “Bash in Berlin.”
