Poirier sits in a position of power within the UFC lightweight division. However, he knows that each time out, his opponent is looking to make a name for himself. That is exactly what Saint-Denis will be trying to do when these two lock up inside the Octagon.

Old lion vs. the new cub: Poirier’s Octagon experience is second to none when it comes to current UFC fighters. He has shared the cage with the likes of Conor McGregor, Charles Oliveira, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Michael Chandler, Max Holloway, and Eddie Alvarez during his illustrious career. Among those he holds wins over McGregor, Chandler, Holloway, Alvarez, and Justin Gaethje.

Saint-Denis does not have anywhere near the same schedule and it will be a massive step up in competition in March.

Wizard on the match and standing: What makes Poirier so dangerous is that his striking has quickly started to match his exceptional ground game. He has used power punches and kicks to finish many foes, adding to his submission skills, which are among the best of the best.

Saint-Denis is a very talented and well-rounded fighter in his own right. He is confident and on a hot streak, so that certainly should make for an interesting clash at UFC 299.

The bottom line: While it may not excite his huge fan base, this is a very legit test for “Diamond” and he can not sleep on him if he hopes to get another title opportunity before he calls it a career.

The Diamond: Not many resumes can match that of Poirier. The veteran has fought and defeated some of the very best the sport has ever seen. That includes his pair of 2021 finishes vs. none other than Conor McGregor.
