Derrick Lewis is just days away from headlining UFC Fight Night in Brazil. However, the heavyweight contender was arrested in his hometown of Houston and charged with reckless driving.
Derrick Lewis Arrested, Charged With Reckless Driving
This Saturday, Derrick Lewis is set to headline the UFC’s return to Brazil against Jailton Almeida.
However, the heavyweight contender was recently arrested and charged back in his hometown of Houston with reckless driving.
According to a report by MMA Fighting, Lewis was caught going 136 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone. He was detained and later released on a personal recognizance bond. The next court date for the fighter is scheduled for in December.
Driving his red Lamborghini, Lewis was caught weaving in and out of traffic. The citation stated that was “willfully and wanton disregard for the safety of persons and property by driving at a high rate of speed and changing lanes in an unsafe manner.”
If he is convicted, Lewis could face up to 30 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $200.
This is scheduled to be the first appearance back inside the Octagon for Lewis since he signed a new contract with the UFC after his win over Marcos Rogerio de Laim back in July at UFC 291.
Lewis, who challenged for the interim heavyweight title in 2021 and the heavyweight title in 2018, is 27-11 overall with 22 knockouts to his credit. His 14 UFC knockouts are most in history, as are the 14 finishes in the heavyweight division.
Currently, Lewis is tied with Anderson Silva and Dustin Poirier for fifth-most finishes. His 18 wins are the second-most in the division and his 27 total fights are tied with Frank Mir for second-most.
Prior to signing with the UFC, Lewis captured the Legacy Fighting Championship heavyweight crown.
Almeida was scheduled to face Curtis Blaydes, but Blaydes was replaced. A native of Brazil, he has won each of his first five UFC appearances and is 19-2 overall.
