UFC Vegas 79 Chance For Lightweight To Emerge

UFC Results

UFC Vegas 79 takes place this Saturday night live on ESPN+. In the main event, Rafael Fizev and Mateusz Gamrot square off in a lightweight five-round battle from the Apex in Las Vegas. For both fighters, it is an opportunity to impress and move up the rankings.

UFC Vegas 79: Lightweights Given Main Event Spotlight

Not everyone gets the opportunity to shine in the spotlight of the UFC and the main event. For Rafael Fiziev and Mateusz Gamrot, that chance comes this Saturday night at UFC Vegas 79.

The lightweight contenders collide in a five-round battle from the Apex in Las Vegas. All of the action airs live on ESPN+.

Along with Fiziev vs. Gamrot, Bryce Mitchell takes on Dan Ige in a featherweight affair and Marina Rodriguez meets Michelle Waterson-Gomez in women’s strawweight action.

UFC Vegas 79: Rafael Fiziev Looking To Bounce Back

For just the second time in his mixed martial arts career, Fiziev is coming off a loss. He was bested by Justin Gaethje via majority decision this past March in a Fight of the Night affair at UFC 296 from London, England.

The defeat snapped a six-fight win streak for the veteran, with the other loss coming in his Octagon debut back in 2019 to Magomed Mustafaev.

Since that time, Fiziev has reeled off wins over Rafael dos Anjos, Brad Riddell, Bobby Green, Renato Moicano, Marc Diakiese and Alex White. Of those, five ended with a bonus checking going to the winner, including three Performance of the Night showings.

Fiziev also showed those skills while competing for several years in Muay Thai, running up a mark of 39-8 with 29 wins by knockout as a pro.

UFC Vegas 79: Mateusz Gamrot Also Likes Bonuses

Much like his opponent, Gamrot has made a positive impact on his bank account since joining the promotion, earning four fight-night bonuses.

A former KSW lightweight and featherweight champion, he is 22-2 overall with a no-contest. Included in that is a current 5-1 mark around a tough decision setback to Beneil Dariush.

This past March at UFC 285, he downed Jalin Turner to improve to 5-2 with the UFC. His only other Octagon loss came to Guram Kutateladze via split decision in his debut.

Prior to joining the UFC, he downed Norman Parke twice in Poland and also had a no-contest with the veteran.
