Not only were WWE fans surprised by Zelina Vega’s United States title win on last week’s SmackDown, but apparently so was the WWE roster.
The promotion has been developing a feud between Vega and US champ Chelsea Green for weeks. Things came to a head this past Friday when Vega received another chance at singles gold. The assumption was that Green would retain. But to the surprise of many, the former valet turned wrestler scored the upset victory.
Well, it seems that WWE fans weren’t the only ones caught off guard by the SmackDown title change. This week, PW Insider reported that many in the company were “legitimately surprised” when Vega scored a win over Green. The creative decision was reportedly kept quiet, and many backstage had no idea there would be a title change until the New York native got the three count.
Vega is a divisive talent among many WWE fans. Not because of anything she has done away from the ring. More so because her wrestling abilities are either loved or disliked by segments of the fanbase. Nevertheless, her work ethic can’t be denied. Whether you enjoy her wrestling or not, she has worked hard to improve her skills in the ring.
Zelina Vega originally signed with the company in 2017. First, she served as the valet of Andrade. However, following the pandemic, she has developed her wrestling and evolved into a legitimate member of the women’s division. Until her title win last week, her high point as a wrestler was winning the 2021 edition of the Queen of the Ring.
