As Backlash approaches this Saturday, the speculation is growing about a potential Cody Rhodes return.
According to PWInsider, internal talks have been had about The American Nightmare making a surprise appearance at Backlash, but nothing is confirmed. The outlet claims, “it makes the most sense” from a storyline perspective, but “haven’t heard 100% that’s the direction”.
Rhodes hasn’t been on TV since he lost to John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 41. The finish saw Travis Scott pull the ref from the ring, and while the former Undisputed WWE Champion hit Scott with a Cross Rhodes, the distraction allowed Cena to get the win and his 17th world title.
With Backlash being WWE’s first Premium Live Event since WrestleMania 41, the assumption is that Rhodes will return to confront Cena or start his next big storyline heading into the summer. A surprise return at Backlash would be his first time on TV since losing the title, and a big moment for WWE’s top baby face and a reset point in the title picture.
PWInsider also noted that other WWE advertising and promotional materials have hinted at a Rhodes return on the May 16th SmackDown episode. So maybe WWE will hold off his return until next Friday. As of now, Cody Rhodes’ return at Backlash is speculation. But fans attending or watching Saturday should be on high alert for a big development.
