The chances CM Punk walks away with the World Heavyweight title tonight at Night 1 of SummerSlam 2025 just got a lot better following a new report.
According to Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, reigning heavyweight king Gunther is currently dealing with a nose injury. It is reportedly an “issue that may require him to take some time off.” The keyword there is “may.” It is no guarantee that he will need to go away for a bit. But if he has a notable injury, setting up time off with a loss at a tentpole event is classic WWE booking.

Gunther regained the Heavyweight belt in June after falling to Royal Rumble winner Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41. After having very lengthy Intercontinental and Heavyweight title runs over the last few years, it would be surprising for “The Ring General” to have another long title reign. So it wouldn’t be shocking if Puk took the title off him in the Night 1 main event of SummerSlam.
The first season of WWE Unreal revealed that Punk was under consideration to win the 2025 Rumble. And in the Night 1 main event at WrestleMania in April. Obviously, the creative team did not go in either direction earlier this year. Adding more fuel to the possibility that they give Punk a historic victory this weekend.
There have also been reports that Seth Rollins was expected to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase on Saturday’s main event winner. It is still unclear if the injury he suffered a few weeks ago on WWE Raw is legit and if that is still the plan, or if a cash-in will be saved for later in the year.
