Stone Cold Steve Austin was one of the biggest WWE superstars that came to prominence during the Attitude Era. However, towards the end of his in-ring career, Steve Austin was supposed to transition to a role of onscreen mentor.
Unsurprisingly, those plans were nixed after Austin’s differences with Vince McMahon happened around 2002. Now, years later, the former WWE star that was supposed to be the heir apparent to Stone Cold has spoken out on the shocking plans.
Luther Reigns was supposed to be mentored by Stone Cold Steve Austin?
In a recent interview on Café De René, former WWE superstar Luther Reigns revealed interesting details on the wild supposed to be an onscreen protege of Stone Cold Steve Austin.
“Yes. Signed (to WWE’s main roster) in early 2003… I think I was down there (in developmental) for about nine months to a year. When the writing team first came down and they said, ‘Matt, we’re gonna make you Stone Cold’s protégé,’ and I’m like, ‘Cool.’ I’m like, ‘Let’s go,'” Reigns said.
“Then Stone Cold got in a fight with Vince (McMahon) and he walked out. I don’t know the whole story, but I’m sure you know more about it than I do,” he added.
Luther Reigns debuted on WWE TV in 2004. He wrestled a few dark matches before that. However, Reigns requested his release from the company in 2005.
As for Austin, he made his return to the 2003 edition of WWE No Way Out and then had a few years in a different onscreen role on WWE television. Ultimately, Steve Austin was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2009.
