Report Details Serious Injury That Took Rey Mysterio Off WrestleMania 41 Card And Could Sideline Him For Months

Rey Mysterio was set to compete on night one of WrestleMania 41. However, it seems that a serious groin injury is what forced him off Saturday’s card.

On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed details regarding the injury spot. Meltzer reported that Rey Mysterio suffered a groin injury. Co-host Bryan Alvarez speculated further on the bad luck situation.

Alvarez added that it was initially thought that Mysterio suffered a knee injury after he was helped to the backstage area. “So what happened with Rey is we got the report that he got hurt at SmackDown, and he was helped to the back, so everyone immediately thought it had to be a knee injury,” said Alvarez.

Meltzer then added further depth about a belief that it could be a groin tear, yet the WWE Hall of Famer still pushed to compete in the match.

Rey Mysterio hoped to compete at WrestleMania 41 despite serious injury

“Yeah, he initially tore his groin. He thought he was going to be able to make the match, and then when they examined him, it was like, you just can’t,” he said. “Because the first thing I heard was that he was going to be able to go, and then I heard this morning that, no, he’s not going to be able to go. So it was one of those things where he was like, I’m going to be able to make it.”

Rey Mysterio missed out on a huge match at WrestleMania 41. However, that paved the way for SmackDown’s newest luchador to make his debut on The Grandest Stage of Them All. Mysterio handpicked former AEW star Rey Fenix to replace him in his match against El Grande Americano.

The former Lucha Brother made his debut on SmackDown last week and secured two victories before WrestleMania. As for Rey Mysterio, it remains to be seen when the former World Heavyweight Champion will be cleared for in-ring action. A severe groin strain could take four months or more to heal from.
