Rumors emerged about Cody Rhodes making a heel turn soon. But a new report claims WWE is keeping “The American Nightmare” right where he is, as one of the company’s biggest babyfaces.
According to a new report from Fightful Select, there were indeed internal discussions earlier in 2024 about Rhodes turning heel. Possibly teaming with The Rock in the lead-up to WrestleMania. But those plans were quickly shot down.
Multiple sources within WWE told the outlet that people close to Cody Rhodes, and within the company, were against the idea. Why? Business is booming with “The American Nightmare” as a top baby face. From huge merchandise sales to sold-out arenas, Rhodes is one of WWE’s top draws. Simply put, there’s no need to fix what ain’t broke.

Even when the idea was floated earlier this year, Fightful was told that the reaction to the heel turn pitch was “cold” with several people expressing concern over how it would impact Rhodes’ connection with the fans. WWE has reportedly locked in plans to keep him as a baby face through the rest of 2025.
Cody Rhodes hasn’t been on WWE TV since he lost the Undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 41. But he’s still listed on WWE’s website for an appearance on the May 16th episode of SmackDown. There has also been evidence he will be back on TV by next month’s Money in the Bank premium live event, at the latest.
