A long-rumored Gunther vs. Goldberg match won’t happen at this year’s SummerSlam, and instead will happen much sooner.
Since he made a surprise appearance at WWE Bad Blood last year and confronted Gunther, there have been rumblings about wrestling legend Goldberg having one last match in the company. The big question has been when that showdown would actually occur.
On Friday, Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer confirmed that the match won’t happen at SummerSlam in August — as some speculated — and will instead headline the company’s return to Atlanta for Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12. There have been rumors that the former WWE and WCW champion could begin the build to the match on Monday’s edition of WWE Raw.
The report also revealed the influence that booking had on Jey Uso’s surprise World Heavyweight title loss this week.
Gunther vs. Goldberg for the heavyweight title was always the plan

Along with confirmation of Gunther vs. Goldberg next month, Meltzer reported that Uso’s loss on Monday was Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s call. And that he always envisioned Goldberg’s retirement match being for the belt, similar to the one he held in WCW.
Furthermore, the WWE head of creative wanted a huge main event for the card that will go head-to-head with AEW: All In Texas.
“Gunther vs. Goldberg was always going to be the retirement match, and it was always going against All in Texas on NBC,” Meltzer noted. “With the idea of maximizing that day with the big match not on Netflix but on free network TV.”
