Following the Trump Administration’s decision to conduct air strikes in Iran, some in the wrestling world are wondering if it could affect next week’s WWE Night of Champions card. Well, a new report suggests that it is unlikely.
WWE Night of Champions will bring a stacked card to Saudi Arabia next Saturday. The card will feature a huge clash between legends John Cena and CM Punk for the WWE title. The finals of the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments. And Solo Sikoa challenging his relative Jacob Fatu for the US title.
Furthermore, the company will produce Friday’s edition of SmackDown from the country. It means many talents from the roster will be on the ground in Saudi. Following US air strikes on targets on the other side of the Persian Gulf in Iran this weekend, there are concerns that there could be major implications for Night of Champions.
Since Saudi Arabia and Iran are rivals, there is fear that the event could be a potential target for retaliatory attacks. Along with US military bases in the region. However, on Sunday, Fightful Select reported that the expectations are that SmackDown and Night of Champions will proceed as planned this week.
While WWE sources have not commented on the topic publicly, the situation is being “monitored accordingly” by officials. Sources in the region also claimed there is too much money invested for it to be scrapped now.
“At least in Saudi Arabia, those around the event are preparing as if the event is happening. One source working on the event called it ‘full steam ahead’ as of Sunday afternoon locally,” Fightful reports. “That one source didn’t believe it would be postponed or canceled. And thought there was too much money at stake with the upcoming Royal Rumble being there.
“Beyond that, the source said that ‘Saudi is one of the safest places in the world’ as it relates to this situation, and another source believed that WWE would be made assurances of said safety,” the outlet added. “The site of the event is in full build mode as of now, and fan events in Riyadh are planned to be announced for this coming week.”
