It seems John Cena went to great lengths to avoid his planned heel turn from leaking. Including keeping the people closest to him in the dark.
In March, a historic professional wrestling event occurred. After two decades as one of the greatest heroes WWE has ever seen, John Cena turned to the dark side. He aligned with The Rock and brutally attacked reigning WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. The moment was so stunning that it even set a new Guinness World Record.
The best part of his heel turn at Elimination Chamber 2025 is that no one really expected it. Sure, some threw the idea out there. But it was random thoughts, and with no real evidence. The surprise of his turn was a huge part of why it worked so well.

John Cena didn’t even tell his wife about heel turn plans?
Obviously, the WWE staff did an exceptional job of keeping the plan a secret. In a new interview this week, WWE creative boss Paul “Triple H” Levesque revealed in a chat with the WWE website the great lengths the crew went to avoid leaks, including some impressive dedication from Cena.
“We kept that so quiet that, on our side, three people on the exec team, from the writing staff, knew. That’s it — me and two others. Nobody else knew. Cena knew, obviously. Cena didn’t even tell his wife. Cena didn’t tell his manager. Cody knew. Cody told no one. Obviously Rock knew.”

With pro wrestling media as big and far-reaching as ever, it is hard to keep secrets in the industry. Often, major plans for talent are revealed days or weeks before it happens. But when it comes to the greatest turn in WWE history, the company did one of its best CIA impersonations to hide the secret and not let the moment be spoiled for their fans.
