Mick Foley won’t get to have the retirement match he was hoping for in 2024. However, if the bout did happen he had an opponent in mind, and it wasn’t a current or former WWE star.
There have been many legendary wrestlers that have performed for WWE. However, few captured the hearts of long-time fans like Mick Foley. The New York native broke the mold for what a WWE Champion looked like. And he did it with a likable persona and death-defying feats.

His last match was over a decade ago, but when the 59-year-old suggested earlier this year he was interested in a retirement match, it garnered a lot of attention among fans. However, a couple of months after revealing his intentions, he admitted a match was unlikely to ever happen due to the lasting effects of concussions during his career.
Since the concept did not get far down the road, an opponent for Foley was never revealed. That is until this month. During a recent conversation at the Nickel City Comic Con, the hardcore legend claimed that none other than former AEW Champion MJF would have been his choice for his final match.
MJF pitched Mick Foley on a storyline leading to his retirement match
“When I was thinking of having that last match, there was no shortage of people from every promotion reaching out to me,” he started by saying [h/t Wrestling Observer]. And one guy I probably would have gone with because he’d clearly done some thinking about it and lined out six great weeks of TV was MJF. We didn’t take a photo together because we didn’t want to ruin the secret meeting,
“But I heard what he had to say, I really liked it. I had no doubt that he would have pulled it off perfectly. He’s so good and in his prime that he could have worked around my weaknesses and played to my strengths,” he added. “And I think we could have done something pretty cool. MJF. Final answer.”
It’s surprising Mick Foley would not have gone against a legendary foe from his past. But it also makes sense to have faced a top star from today who could helped exceed expectations for the match. Plus, being the most famous wrestlers ever from Long Island, New York would have been a great hook as well.
