We heard she was coming back, and then she went to AEW, but at one point Mercedes Mone had planned to return at WrestleMania 39. That information comes from Mercedes directly, thanks to her own newsletter-because of course she has her own newsletter. Following the stunning exit of both Sasha Banks and Naomi, WWE fans were longing for a return of Banks. When Triple H rose to power, there was a hope that he could mend those broken fences. And for a moment, it seemed possible, if not likely.

As the former WWE Superstar put it, it was an interesting turn of events. Mone, who loves a big spotlight, was at a football game at SoFi Stadium. This was months prior to WrestleMania 39, where the event was also in the home of the LA Rams (and Chargers). Mercedes Mone boasts of being on the floor and taking the game in. While enjoying things, she told herself she needed to be there, needed to be a part of WrestleMania 39. So, it wasn’t just wishful WWE fans. At one point, the AEW talent had herself decided that she was going to make a WWE return happen.
How did it not happen?
In spite of all the chatter otherwise, she was determined to resume life as a WWE Superstar. But, she, Tony Khan and her manager Kevin Undergaro had been texting and chatting as friends, which led to her famous appearance in the crowd at the 2023 edition of All In. She reveals that she went not because of negotiations, nor to strike a deal. Instead, she went as a wrestling fan. But while she was in that crowd in London, August of 2023, she decided she was going to sign with AEW.

There is one oddity, unless the reports are not transcribed perfectly. Mone, then Banks, walked out in 2022. WrestleMania 39 happened in April of 2023, and she made her decision in August of 2023. The way it read, however, was as though All In happened before WrestleMania 39 and changed her mind. Just, that timeline doesn’t compute. And, she was still under WWE contract during All In in 2022, so there’s no way that happened (or that she’d spill that tea, for fear of legal entanglements).
Regardless, she seems happy and hasn’t really elevated the women’s division in AEW any more than any other prior arrival. She even started off life in AEW on the wrong foot. Prior to debuting, she openly admitted she was keeping her WWE return options open. So, we may still see Mercedes Mone at WrestleMania yet.
