In a surprising reveal, John Cena claimed this week that elements of his new heel character he ripped off from none other than Stephanie McMahon.

We are only a couple of months into the heel version of John Cena. It is a character that he continues to develop after his shocking turn at Elimination Chamber in March. It is similar to some bad guys we have seen in the past, while also being unique.

The 17-time world champion sat down for a new episode of ESPN+ series “Stephanie’s Places” with the daughter of WWE founder Vince McMahon. During the conversation, she admitted that she was very happy to see Cena turn to the dark side. And mentioned that she had long pushed for the switch. In response, the “Unseen 17” dropped a fascinating nugget of information.

“Can I just say I had some really good people to learn from. You are on a very short list of names that falls into,” he said. “I flat out steal a lot from you. So, thanks for helping me through this.”

When Stephanie McMahon suggested Cena was giving her way too much credit, he answered back by saying, “You never know how you affect people.”

McMahon, just like her father and brother, was never skilled at the fine art of wrestling. However, as far as heels go during her time as an on-air personality, she was one of the best. She was good at displaying a variety of emotions and was always strong at progressing a story and getting a message across.

While John Cena’s heel character isn’t a direct derivative of McMahon’s character, it makes sense if he is using a few elements of her heel persona in his current work.
